Vernon Hills High School will take on a school-wide summer reading approach this year.

Students of all grade levels** will choose one book from a list of five:

  1. All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely (includes some mature content)

  2. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

  3. March: Book 3 by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, art by Nate Powell

  4. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

  5. The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

Staff members and parents are invited to read a book of their choosing as well. The goal is enjoy a book of interest and to engage in a day of discussion about that book in the fall. To prepare for that discussion, please use at least 3 sticky notes to record a question, reaction, and/or connection as you read. Please procure the book online, in a bookstore, or at your local library. We hope that you enjoy your selection!

**Students enrolled in AP English will have an additional reading assignment. AP Lang (juniors) also reads The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and AP Lit (seniors) also reads East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
