The teams will face off against each other for an epic, highlight reel match-up. Come out and pack the place for a game you won’t want to miss. Donations of at least one dollar are recommended, as they contribute to bettering the Special Olympics program at D128. Those who donate will have an opportunity to receive a free Chick-Fil-A promotional calendar. Concessions will be available and a portion of the proceeds will fund the Special Olympics as well. Turnabout Tickets are available! During the month of February, Vernon Hills High School will celebrate BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Today, February 21, 2017 DID YOU KNOW FACT OF THE DAY: Condoleezza Rice was born on November 14, 1954, in Birmingham, Alabama. She grew up surrounded by racism in the segregated South, but went on to become the first woman and first African-American to serve as provost of Stanford University. In 2001, Rice was appointed national security adviser by President George W. Bush, becoming the first black woman (and second woman) to hold the post, and went on to become the first black woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State. (She was the nation’s 66th Secretary of State, serving from January 2005 to 2009). (Powell 2/21)

Today, February 22, 2017 DID YOU KNOW FACT OF THE DAY: Alicia Garza’s poem posted on facebook as a reaction to George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin has become a national movement known as Black Lives Matter. The poem was intended as an affirmation for a community distraught over a senseless killing. (Powell 2/22)

Today, February 23, 2017 DID YOU KNOW FACT OF THE DAY: Doctor Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist from New York, was living in Los Angeles when she received her first patent, becoming the first African American female doctor to patent a medical invention. Patricia Bath’s patent was for a method for removing cataract lenses that transformed eye surgery by using a laser device making the procedure more accurate. (Powell 2/23)

Congratulations to the JV Scholastic Bowl team, who competed in the conference tournament Thursday night, beating Glenbrook North 380-350 in the final round to win its first ever conference championship. The team was led by strong performances by Keshav Sivaram, Ben Gorashchenko, Tyler Kading, Jeffrey Zhang, and David Leshchiner. Congratulations to the entire team on its amazing season! Do you wish you knew a little more about the Syrian conflict and refugee crisis? Or, feeling helpless and wishing for some way to help those refugees? MSA would like to invite you to an Aleppo Awareness event on Wednesday, March 1st in Room 2220 at 3:20 P.M. Do you speak Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, or Portuguese? You are a candidate to earn the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy. Students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language earn the seal. It is noted on the transcript and students will receive 2 years of college credit at state colleges/universities in Illinois. To demonstrate proficiency in one of the languages mentioned above students may use an AP language score or the AAPPL test. Congratulations to Math Team for a second place finish at Saturday’s regional competition. Special congratulations to Alexa Pomerantz who placed first among all students taking the Geometry test and to Oliver Leung who placed second among all students taking the Precalculus test. Both of our 8-Person teams placed first and our Junior/Senior 2-Person team of Aakash Setty and Anmol Parande took second place.
